The Unconscious World of Shannan Click
Late Night, by Shannan Click, courtesy of the artist.
On the eve of her first solo exhibition in Los Angeles, we asked artist Shannan Click a few questions. Click is “exploring what lies just beneath the surface of being. These floating structures are more than what they appear to be. They invite you in—guiding the mind and imagination to roam freely through unknown worlds that somehow feel deeply familiar.”
Step into the Unconscious World of artist Shannon Click.
THE LAB MAG: What does FORM mean to you as an artist?
SHANNAN CLICK: In my work, form is fluid—intentionally shaped in the moment, directed by feeling rather than fixed plans
LAB: Can you tell us how you found the title of your show and what it means in relation to the series?
SC: The title always comes last. It wasn’t until I sat with the work that Unconscious Worlds revealed itself as the only fitting name. Each painting flowed into the next without any preconceived plan—just a direct transmission from somewhere deeper, straight onto the canvas. What emerged felt like entire worlds formed from my unconscious—drawn from memories, emotions, and experiences accumulated over a lifetime. These are inner landscapes, shaped not only by feeling, but also by my deep love for design, architecture, and structure.

LAB: Is there a piece of work you are most proud of and why?
SC: Every piece holds meaning for me, but Tethered stirs something deeper. I’ll keep the specifics to myself—I’d rather let others experience it through their own lens
LAB: What do you do when the gods of inspiration leave you, have you any remedy for artist's block?
SC: Travel is always a good idea, but honestly, I’m constantly in motion—even when I’m home. One day I’m deep in a painting, the next I’m barefoot in the garden, sketching out a house design, or solving some puzzle that pulls me in. Creativity never really stops for me—it just shifts shape. In the center of it all, is my family. They don’t interrupt the flow—they’re part of it. Everything moves in a circle, and I always find myself coming back to where it all began: creating, building, feeling, living

LAB: Do you have a daily ritual?
SC: I used to wish I had set rituals, but the more I grow into myself, the more I realize they’re already there—just not in a daily, predictable way. They surface when they need to, woven into how I move through life and create
LAB: Give us your thoughts on being an artist in Los Angeles.
SC: I think it’s amazing—there’s so much creativity all around, so many resources, so much beauty. And if you’re really looking, there are always people willing to help, share, and uplift. You just have to be open to finding them

LAB: What's the best advice you've ever been given?
SC: “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” — Mom, always keeping it real.
