DATALAND

the world’s first museum of art, los angeles

DATALAND, the world’s first Museum of AI Arts, has opened at Frank Gehry’s The Grand LA, creating a permanent home for the visionary work of Refik Anadol Studio. Machine Dreams: Rainforest is now open to the public.

Conceived by artist Refik Anadol and creative director Efsun Erkılıç, the museum explores the intersection of human imagination, artificial intelligence, science and nature, redefining what a museum can be in the digital age.

At its heart is the Large Nature Model—the world’s first open-source AI model trained exclusively on nature, built from one of the most extensive ethically collected datasets of the natural world. This is important as the ethical nature of Large Language Models has become of primary importance in the discussion about the future of AI. Refik and Efsun understand the fine line we walk and are determined to shine a light on how we can move forward in a positive way.

Drawing on trusted scientific institutions, museums, universities and public archives, the model transforms biodiversity, climate and ecosystem data into immersive, multi-sensory experiences that reveal both the beauty and fragility of our planet.

DATALAND is founded on a commitment to responsible AI, ethical data collection and environmental stewardship. Beyond presenting extraordinary digital artworks, it aims to educate, inspire and foster a deeper connection between people and the natural world, demonstrating how art, science and technology can work together to advance environmental awareness and conservation. Positioned in the heart of Los Angeles’ cultural district, DATALAND promises to become a landmark destination where creativity, innovation and ecological consciousness converge.

Having visited the museum before it opened to the world, the profound effect in the Infinity Room of experiencing the sound of the now extinct Kaua'i 'ō'ō bird calling to find a mate and the eerie silence that followed gave a visceral example of how digital art can move the human heart. Let’s hope it moves the heart to action. That would mean the founders Refik and Efsun had succeeded in their dream.
