THE THE

inertiavariations

On the eve of THE THE arriving for their West Coast tour we are happy to inform you that there will be a screening of The Inertia Variations, a film exploring musician songwriter Matt Johnson’s 15 year absence from the public stage.

The Laboratory Arts Collective had the good fortune to speak with filmmaker Johanna St Michaels and Matt Johnson about their project and life in general in our latest issue IMAGE. Here’s a sample of the conversation from the interview.

WHY IS CREATIVITY IMPORTANT?

Johanna: I was just thinking about what creativity is. For me it’s like living in a country where religion has disappeared and art replaced that for me. I think it’s important for the soul to see other people’s ideas and I think it’s important to try to clarify yourself through creativity.

Matt: I think one of the main reasons that we are put on this planet is to create. It’s unfortunate that the word creativity becomes a bit exclusive and it’s just the domain of artists, musicians and filmmakers... I think everybody is creative and you have these different ways of expressing it. You have these incredibly creative gardeners or cooks, or the way some people bring up their children. I think just the act of doing something with your full focus and attention is creative. I’m not a religious person. I believe in God but I don’t believe in religion. I think everyone has their own personal God that they carry around with them. The act of creativity, whatever it is you do, to create and to love, that is what we’re here for.
