LISTEN

Enchanted by James Morrison with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra

“I was thrilled when one of Australia's (if not the world's) great jazz musicians, James Morrison, wrote an album of music to a number of my paintings. I am particularly pleased every time I hear the piece Sydney by night.”

“Any new sketch book. Full of untouched white pages with the expectation that the first mark will lead to something worth keeping.”

SEE

Red Room (Harmony in Red) by Henri Matisse

“There are hundreds, but let's just say any Van Gogh sunflower picture that shows you can make a monumental statement by simply looking and loving a vase of flowers or Matisse's Red Studio. It shows the great joy that can be found in an artist's working space.”

WATCH

The Wizard Of Oz directed by Victor Fleming.

“As a small boy, the thrilling and slightly scary excitement of seeing the Wizard of Oz. The intensity of the colour was unlike anything I had experienced before.”

Kunsthaus Zürich in Switzerland

“We've just returned from Switzerland and to stand in a room in the gallery at Zurich, surrounded by huge Monet water lily paintings and to have no-one else in the room was breathtaking.”

“Being a bit of a luddite, I’ve only just got a mobile phone and I’m beginning to understand that it can be used for more than simple communication. Also I’m rather fond of a black biro that I “borrowed” from the beautiful Baur au Lac in Zurich.”

VISIT

“For me, nothing is as good as swimming in clear water in front of our home on Sydney Harbour and having breakfast on our front lawn.

“I like the surprise when a painting that you had planned to be "something" becomes something else. That's the adventure and the journey of making art. As an example, a little picture that started to be a view of the beach in front of my studio turned into a much more dynamic work called Heatwave.”
